Raison d'être du blog :

Trois frères de mon grand père Antoine Castonguay (nés à Glen-Nevis en Ontario) ont travaillé à Dalhousie Mills au Québec, pour l'entretien des trains, au service des usagers, à l'aiguillage et pour l'entretien des voies ferrées pour la Canadian Pacific Railway Company :

- Pierre Castonguay (en souvenir duquel j'ai été nommé)
- Alexandre Castonguay
- Willie Castonguay

La tradition s'est poursuivie dans ma famille puisque Richard Delay mon beau frère, l'époux de ma soeur Ginette Castonguay, a travaillé pour la Canadian Pacific Railway Company pendant de nombreuses années à Montréal.

C'est en l'honneur de ces hommes des trains que je maintiens ce blog.

C'est aussi en l'honneur de mon père Bernard Castonguay, qui durant toute son enfance, a passé ses étés à Glen Nevis en Ontario chez les Lacombes de la Consession 9 et les Castonguay du hameau de Glen Nevis, tout près de la vieille église Saint Margaret of Scotland avec son cimetière paroissial où son inhumés mes grands parents. À cette époque il écoutait le chanteur Jimmie Rodgers (1897 – 1933), fils d'Aaron Rodgers, un contremaître sur le « Mobile et Ohio » chemin de fer aux USA. Jimmie fut le chantre des voies ferrées et un des fondateurs du style western (l'ancêtre du country). Vous pouvez d'ailleurs entendre un de ses grands succès « Waiting for a Train » datant de 1928 sur cette page. Sans s'en rendre compte, mon père, à travers la musique de Rodgers que l'on surnommait "The Singing Brakeman", m'a appris à aimer la musique de trains. Lorsque j'entends le sifflement du train à l'aube lorsqu'il dévale la voie ferrée à Laval, j'ai toujours cette belle nostalgie de la maison victorienne que nous habitions l'été, Rang St-Patrick entre St-Télesphore et Dalhousie Mills à la campagne dans le comté de Vaudreuil-Soulanges. Un tronçon de rang avec son école de village, sa petite église protestante et son cimetière. Je repense aussi à la grande église de St-Télesphore aux bancs de bois inconfortables et cette inauguration mentionnée dans l'édition du 6 juin 1895 du Progrès de Valleyfield dans laquelle on apprend que monseigneur Fabre, l'évêque du diocèse, s’est rendu le 28 mai 1895 à Saint-Télesphore pour procéder à la consécration de l’église paroissiale dont la construction venait d’être achevée. C'est dans le cimetière adjacent qu'est inhumée Tante Rollande Lacombe et son époux Fernand Giroux. Tante Rollande faisait du journalisme dans le journal local et confectionnait la meilleure confiture de catherinettes de la région. Pour en revenir à Monseigneur Fabre en 1895, il a aussi profité de cette occasion pour se rendre dans chaque rang de la paroisse pour bénir les croix de chemin. Dans le rang St-Georges, il est même passé sous l’arbre croche, cet arbre qui était assez exceptionnel et qui, semble t-il, avait la particularité de former une sorte de viaduc au-dessus du chemin de la Côte St-Georges. On mentionne qu’un homme sans chapeau pouvait passer en dessous et qu’une charrette pouvait aisément y passer.
